MTSU sports teams have been nicknamed everything from the Teachers to the Normalites to the Pedagogues. The name Blue Raider was the winning entry from a newspaper contest in 1934. The team’s mascot was a hound dog named Ole Blue in the 1970s. Today, it’s a winged horse named Lightning that symbolizes the university’s aerospace and horse science programs.
